2009 is here! A lot of us are happy to see the back of 2008.
With the re-evaluation of assets all around the world, in stocks, real estate and bonds, as well as retirement savings being eroded and unemployment growing day by day, we all have been seriously affected by the global economic meltdown of 2008.

If you are anything like me you have to remember 100's of user names and passwords for a huge amount of internet sites. Today's success tip comes from
Cydney O'Sullivan.
Born in California, Cydney moved to Australia and carved out a successful business career and developed a large property portfolio. She then moved into the stock market and today has a multi-million dollar portfolio.
Can you describe your first ever trade and what you learnt from it?
Technically, my first trade would have been one that I took through a full service broker. I instructed him to sell some shares that I'd bought pre-float, but I didn't know to specify a 'limit' or firm price. During that day he sold all my shares at lower and lower prices (whatever the buyers were offering) and gave away half their value at a time in my life when I really needed the money.
My first online broking trade was also memorable because although I had it all worked out to buy into the 20 companies I mentioned earlier, I was nervous and entered the trade wrong and accidentally bought nearly $100,000 worth of the first share on my list. I had spent half of my entire bank on one share. I wasn't sure what to do because I hadn't planned for that and up until that point in my life, most of the items I'd purchased had been difficult to sell once I bought them (like cars and houses) and here I was with almost $100,000 worth of AGL.
For days after buying the shares I watched the price go down a few cents every day (which on a position of that size represented hundreds of dollars). I didn't want to tell anyone what I had done, especially as my family, friends and advisors had told me that I was crazy for going into share investing. For days I sat and thought about what to do. Finally, at the end of the week, I sold about $85,000 worth of the shares, taking my position back to the smaller quantity I originally meant to buy. I took about a $2,000 loss, but freed up the money to invest across another nine companies and was amazed at how quickly I was able to correct the error.
In hindsight it would have been fine to hold the AGL for the long term, as the shares have gone up nearly 100 per cent since then, but it was more risk than I was comfortable with and it's important to feel comfortable with your positions if you are going to build up your confidence. I have increased my tolerance for holding large positions gradually over time.
I now think that trade was the best thing that could have happened to me because I learnt:
If you buy into the right companies, the positions are usually liquid (easy to get in and out of) because there are plenty of buyers and sellers.
The best practice is to keep your capital working effectively.
To cut losses quickly when you make a mistake in order to preserve your emotional and financial capital.
To keep to my plan and take large trades with confidence.
To review my trades before placing them to avoid costly mistakes.
